Building Authentic Relationships in Real Estate: A Conversation with Richard Bridges
In the fast-paced world of real estate, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of sales goals, listings, and transactions. But for Richard Bridges, a broker at Samson Properties, the key to long-term success isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about building meaningful relationships. Whether he’s working with clients, fellow agents, or his family, Richard’s approach centers around service, authenticity, and the simple joy of connecting with others.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Richard to discuss what sets him apart in the real estate industry and how he maintains a strong balance between his professional and personal life. What emerged was a candid and inspiring conversation about leadership, motivation, and the importance of putting people first.
The Importance of Authenticity in Business
Richard’s perspective on real estate is refreshing—he’s not about hard selling or overpromising. In fact, he openly admits that he’s not a “natural salesperson” and that sales can sometimes feel uncomfortable. But that’s exactly why his approach works. Richard focuses on being excellent at his job, ensuring his clients have a positive experience, and letting the results speak for themselves. He’s built a strong referral network not by chasing every lead but by simply being authentic, asking for referrals when the time feels right, and treating people with respect.
He acknowledges that while many agents might rely heavily on marketing strategies or automated systems, he’s found success by being vulnerable and asking for help when needed. Richard explains, “I’ve been fortunate enough not to need to do much direct marketing, and that’s partly because I’m just open with people and ask for what I need. When you’re doing a good job and helping others, you don’t always have to push for sales.”
But that doesn’t mean Richard doesn’t appreciate the value of good marketing—he’s part of a full-scale recruiting and marketing team at Samson Properties, where they use a variety of tools to engage both clients and agents. From lunch-and-learns at high-end restaurants to personalized emails and social media engagement, Richard understands that the right marketing can help amplify the connections you’re already building.
Maintaining Relationships with Clients and Colleagues
When it comes to maintaining relationships, Richard doesn’t just rely on automated follow-ups. For him, it’s all about the personal touch. He makes it a point to check in with past clients in ways that feel genuine—whether it’s sending a handwritten note, catching up over a cup of coffee, or sending a text on their birthday with a message tailored specifically to them.
“I think the key to keeping relationships strong is staying top of mind in an authentic way,” Richard says. “People appreciate when you remember the small things and take the time to make them feel special. A simple ‘happy birthday’ message, when done right, can mean a lot more than a generic comment on social media.”
Richard has also built strong relationships within the real estate community, where he invests time and effort in mentoring and supporting others. Through one-on-one coaching, group meetups, and recruiting calls, he encourages those around him to aim for continuous improvement—not just for the sake of career advancement, but for personal growth as well. As he explains, “If you can help others achieve their goals, you’re already on the path to success.”
Leadership Through Service
Despite being in a position where he could be considered a leader, Richard humbly sees himself as a servant first. He believes leadership is less about title and more about the ability to positively influence and guide others. Inspired by the words of Zig Ziglar, his life motto is simple: “If you help enough people get what they want in life, you’ll never have to worry about what you want.”
For Richard, this quote is more than just a saying—it’s a philosophy that drives his work. Whether it’s guiding an agent through their first transaction or supporting a high school wrestler on the mat, his focus remains on the well-being and success of others. “It’s not about being the smartest person in the room,” he says. “It’s about helping others succeed. That’s what makes a true leader.”
Finding Balance and Embracing New Experiences
Outside of real estate, Richard prioritizes time with his family. He and his wife regularly take time for date nights, explore new activities, and try out new experiences like cooking classes and dancing. Richard’s family plays an important role in his life, as he has children ranging from 16 to 20 years old.
As a father, he finds joy in experiencing things for the first time—not just for himself but alongside his kids. “It’s fun to share these experiences with them as they get older. We get to learn together, and that’s a big part of what keeps me motivated.”
One of Richard’s other passions is coaching wrestling, a sport he’s been involved with for most of his life. Having wrestled throughout his youth, he now coaches high school wrestlers, helping them navigate the challenges of the sport and life itself. “Coaching is its own kind of leadership,” he reflects. “It’s not always about being the best in the room, but about helping others realize their potential.”
Looking Ahead: Goals and Vision for 2025
As 2025 unfolds, Richard has set personal and professional goals to continue his growth. He aims to help 15 families buy or sell a home this year and is on track to meet that goal. Additionally, he’s focused on recruiting talented agents to join the Samson Properties family, with a target of converting 50% of his recruiting appointments. “It’s not just about hitting numbers,” Richard says. “It’s about having genuine conversations and showing people the value of being part of a company like Samson.”
Final Thoughts: The Power of People
At the end of the day, what drives Richard Bridges is people. His work in real estate, his coaching, his family life—it’s all about helping others succeed and being part of their journey. As he so wisely puts it, “Real estate isn’t just about homes; it’s about the people who live in them. And I’m lucky to have the chance to be a part of so many different people’s stories.”
