A Conversation with Bob Walker: Law, Legacy, and Lifelong Learning
When it comes to legal expertise, Bob Walker, of the Law Office of Robert B. Walker in Herndon and Reston, Virginia, brings decades of experience in estate planning, wills, trusts, and probate litigation. Beyond that, he dedicates his time to pro bono domestic assault cases, advocating for victims and providing legal support for protective orders. He also serves as a Special Justice for civil commitment in Fairfax. In our conversation, Bob shared his career journey, insights into legal misconceptions, and the importance of personalized estate planning.
From Science to Law: An Unconventional Journey
Bob’s path to law wasn’t typical. With undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology and a master’s in clinical chemistry, he initially pursued a career in medical technology. Working as the chief medical technologist at the University of Tennessee’s teaching hospital, he reached a point where advancement required either medical school or a PhD, neither of which interested him. A mentor suggested law school, and after some thought, he gave it a shot—attending the night program at the University of Memphis Law School while continuing his work in the lab.
Adapting to the Socratic teaching method in law school was a challenge at first, as he was used to the structured, answer-driven nature of science. However, his drive to avoid embarrassment in class made him one of the most prepared students, setting the stage for his legal career.
Building a Legal Career & Embracing Independence
After clerking for a law firm during school, Bob began his legal practice in transportation law, representing trucking and bus companies before the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). When that industry was deregulated, he transitioned into private practice, eventually opening his own firm in 1996.
Though partnerships weren’t the right fit for him, running his own practice allowed him the freedom to make decisions independently. He enjoys managing his cases his way, free from the small bureaucratic disputes of larger firms.
Legal Misconceptions & Bridging the Communication Gap
A common misconception about attorneys is that they’re difficult to understand. Legal jargon often creates a barrier between lawyers and their clients. Bob acknowledges this and strives to simplify legal language, ensuring clients fully understand the legal process, particularly in court. He believes clear communication builds trust and makes the legal experience less intimidating for clients.
Marketing in a Digital Age
Bob maintains a Facebook page but has largely stepped back from social media marketing. He acknowledges that if he were earlier in his career, he’d be more engaged in video content and digital branding. However, as he approaches retirement, he’s content with where his business stands and isn’t looking to aggressively expand.
Planning for the Future: Estate & Probate Law
One of Bob’s key takeaways is that many people wait too long to plan for the future. He emphasizes that as soon as you turn 18, it’s essential to have basic legal documents in place, including a will, power of attorney, and advanced medical directive.
One memorable case he referenced involved a family dispute over end-of-life care, which escalated into a legal battle involving the Governor of Virginia. His advice? Plan early to avoid unnecessary stress for loved ones.
Giving Back Through Pro Bono Work
Beyond estate planning, Bob dedicates time to representing domestic violence victims pro bono. His work with Legal Services of Northern Virginia has given him an eye-opening perspective on family law dynamics. Many of the women he represents have never had anyone advocate for them, and he finds great fulfillment in providing them the legal support they need.
What’s Next? Retirement & Beyond
Bob is considering retiring within the next few years, possibly relocating to the Gulf Coast. However, he’s unsure what retirement will look like—while he enjoys the idea of more free time, he doesn’t see himself completely stepping away from legal work. Golf is definitely not in his plans, but he may return to fishing, a hobby he has enjoyed in the past.
Final Advice & Legacy
Bob leaves us with one essential piece of wisdom: DIY legal documents can be risky. While online legal services can seem convenient, many people make mistakes that cost more to fix than if they had consulted a professional in the first place. His advice? Consult a qualified attorney to ensure your legal affairs are in order.
While Bob may soon trade his office for the beach, his legacy in estate planning and advocacy remains strong. If you’re looking for expert legal advice in Herndon, Reston, or beyond, Bob Walker’s decades of experience ensure your affairs are in trusted hands.
