From Nurse to Entrepreneur: The Inspiring Journey Behind My V Experts
Hi, I’m Karina, a proud mom of three boys, a former nurse turned entrepreneur, and the founder of My V Experts. My journey from healthcare to owning a thriving virtual assistant business has been a mix of passion, challenges, and inspiration—and I’m thrilled to share my story.
The Journey: From Nurse to Business Owner
I began my career in the Philippines, where I graduated as a nurse. After moving to the U.S., I started as a certified nursing assistant while studying for my boards. Once I became a registered nurse, I quickly advanced to a charge nurse role, then director, and eventually held executive titles like VP of Admissions and VP of Marketing and Business Development. It was during this time, particularly through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, that I noticed a significant need for virtual assistance in healthcare and other industries.
The pandemic made it nearly impossible to find reliable in-office workers. That’s when I realized the potential of leveraging my network of talented professionals back in the Philippines. With English as their second language and a strong educational background, they had the skills and adaptability to meet the demands of U.S. businesses. My V Experts was born out of this realization, aiming to solve the hiring challenges many businesses face by providing reliable, tailored virtual assistant services.
What is a Virtual Assistant, and Why Does It Matter?
For those unfamiliar, a virtual assistant (VA) is someone who handles tasks remotely, helping businesses streamline operations without the cost of hiring in-office staff. From scheduling and billing to cold calling and marketing, a VA can be your right-hand support, allowing you to focus on the bigger picture while maintaining work-life balance.
With my healthcare background, I bring a unique perspective to the VA industry. I understand the operational side of healthcare—billing, clinical reviews, scheduling—and have tailored our services to meet the specific needs of business owners. Whether you’re a dentist, cardiologist, skilled nursing facility, or even an auto shop, we customize our approach to align with your workflow. The result? Seamless integration and support that feels like an extension of your team.
Inspiration: Family and a Legacy of Entrepreneurship
My greatest inspirations are my family and my mom, who taught me the value of hard work and resilience. Growing up, I watched her transform from selling sweepstakes tickets in the Philippines to building multiple successful businesses, including a pawn shop, a foreign exchange company, and a water station. She’s always encouraged me to take risks, believe in myself, and pave my own way.
Today, my three boys and my husband are my biggest “why.” They fuel my passion for helping other entrepreneurs achieve their dreams while also giving back to my community in the Philippines. Providing opportunities for talented professionals there is deeply fulfilling—and it’s a reminder that success can create ripples of positive change.
Tackling Challenges and Building Trust
Starting a business is never easy. It’s overwhelming at times, especially when you’re wearing multiple hats and trying to maintain balance. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t have to do it all. Trusting my own virtual assistants was a turning point for me. Letting go of tasks like invoicing, payroll, and cold calling allowed me to focus on growing the business and spending quality time with my family.
A common misconception about virtual assistants is that they should know everything from the start. But just like any in-person hire, there’s a learning curve. Every business has unique workflows, and it’s essential to invest in training and clear communication. When you do, the partnership can be incredibly rewarding and effective.
Looking Ahead: Scaling and Innovating with AI
In the next five years, I envision My V Experts expanding globally. We’re already in talks with clients in Australia and the UK, and I’m excited to see how we can bring our tailored services to businesses worldwide.
We’re also integrating AI into our operations to enhance efficiency. For instance, we’re exploring AI tools for referral system reviews, clinical decision support, and payer verification. These advancements will help our virtual assistants work smarter, not harder, allowing us to deliver even better results for our clients.
A Final Note: Progress Over Perfection
As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to fall into the trap of striving for perfection. But I’ve learned that progress is what truly matters. Give yourself grace, celebrate small wins, and remember that every step forward counts.
To anyone out there dreaming of starting or scaling a business: you don’t have to do it alone. My V Experts is here to support you, tailor solutions to your needs, and help you achieve the balance and success you deserve. Let’s grow together!
