From Humble Beginnings to Executive Leadership

Joe’s journey into leadership started at the young age of 16 when, instead of joining student government, he boldly wrote to the Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii and secured a meeting. This early experience sparked his passion for politics and public service, leading him on a path filled with diverse opportunities—from interning with state legislators to working with governors and prominent organizations.

Growing up in a rural and economically disadvantaged community in Hawaii, Joe credits his upbringing for shaping his values and resilience. His mother, a cleaning lady, and his father, a self-taught journalist, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a drive to make a difference. These foundational experiences continue to influence his approach to leadership today.

Transitioning into Coaching and Strategic Advising

After serving nearly 15 years as the President and CEO of the Health Facilities Association of Maryland (HFAM), Joe decided to shift gears and focus on Triple Latte Leadership full-time. With a desire to continue making a meaningful impact, he also founded DeMattos Strategic Advisors, a firm specializing in healthcare policy, government affairs, and public relations.

Joe’s extensive experience in navigating complex policy landscapes during crises such as the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic has positioned him as a trusted advisor for organizations looking to achieve operational excellence. He believes in the power of resilience, strategic planning, and measurable goals to drive success.
